The Rebel reef

a film about resilience

After surviving a near death experience

the sole divemaster in a Honduran beach town devotes himself to a mysteriously thriving reef–awakening questions about nature, healing, and the limits of both.

Divemaster Christian Carias is the only divemaster in Tela, Honduras, and he protects a “rebellious” reef that seems to defy science. Hot, polluted, and silty – the corals here persist and resist conditions that normally decimate reefs. Nobody knows why because barely anyone knows this reef exists. After a near-death motorcycle accident, Christian is ordered to go to the water. Unable to walk or dive, he has to maintain his faith. The ocean he’s dedicated his life to miraculously heals him. When a catastrophic death event happens on this seemingly-invincible reef, Christian must confront a profound question that mirrors his own recovery: in the face of overwhelming loss, do we dare to hope?

music for the ocean

Emmy-nominated composer Chad Cannon collaborated with Tela Coral during a scientific and filming expedition in Tela, Honduras, where he composed the original score for the  The Rebel Reef film.

The score, written during the expedition and inspired by firsthand encounters with the reef, became a central emotional element of the film. That music has since evolved into Music for the Ocean, a live performance experience that brings ocean stories from the field to audiences on land.

Music for the Ocean is now touring, using original composition, visual storytelling, and immersive production to create space for reflection, connection, and stewardship for the marine world.
